HOW TO PICK A STORY CONCEPT THAT WORKS.

So, you are starting a fiction work but you don’t know which story concept you want to start with. If you are anything like me, you have at least five story concepts in your head at one time. So, how do you pick a story concept when you have so many prepared? We need to answer a few questions.

1. What goals do you have as a writer?

Are you looking to write for fun, looking traditionally publish or self-publish?

2. Is this your first-time writing fiction?

If this your first-time writing fiction, pick the concept that seems the most fun to write and focus on learning the techniques of fiction writing instead of focusing of publishing. The goal is to learn to finish a project in full before perfecting your craft.

3. Will this concept make you a better writer?

4. What are you most excited to write not to publish?

5. Which concept feels most fleshed out?

Figure out which concept has the most notes attached to it.

6. Is your concept original or at least having a well-defined hook?

If you have any concepts left (2–3 concepts), try them out, one should stand out further in the drafting process. Define each concept by the 5 W’s and 1 H (who, what, when, where, why and how), as well as what the internal and external conflicts will occur in each concept.
